Centennial School Board Position 3 – At Large
Sumitra is a community organizer and a leader who is passionate about advocating for communities of color and immigrant and refugee families. Sumitra is a first-generation college graduate who came to the United States as a Bhutanese refugee immigrant when she was a teen. Sumitra attended David Douglas High School and graduated from Portland State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. Sumitra currently serves as Vice President of the Oregon Bhutanese Community Organization and was recently appointed to the Metro Citizenship Review Committee. Sumitra also serve as a Community Engagement Liaison with the City of Portland. Sumitra is running for Centennial School Board, Position 3–at large because Sumitra understands the power of public education and the positive impact it can have on an individual, a community, and our state. Schools are an integral part of our community, but learning and life success does not stop when the school bell rings. As a community advocate, Sumitra has fought for resources for education, health care, accessible transportation options, and affordable housing at the local and state level–all of the things that can impact a student arriving at school focused and ready to learn. Sumitra will continue to advocate for student success inside and outside the classroom.
